Spring brings Garden Joy Travel Tote

TravelTote Front revisedOh, what a winter we have had!!!  As most of us are thawing out from what seems to be a never-ending barrage of snow, ice, and all things chilly, let’s cross our fingers that the weather is in tune with what the calendar says-  First Day of Spring officially starts on March 20.  That’s tomorrow!!!  And with the advent of Spring, that means we’ll soon be able to enjoy longer, warmer days full of sunshine!!   Whether you’ll be spending those days in the garden, taking trips to the beach or lake, toting your quilting gear to retreat with the girls, or going picnicking at the park, do I know the perfect bag to take along on all of your fair weather adventures!!

Talented Clothworks designer, Karen Roti, has sent me some ‘sneak peek’ pics of a new tote bag pattern she’s developing called the Garden Joy Travel Tote.  As you can tell from the pictures, she used fabric from her Clothworks line called ‘Garden Joy’, which is out in stores now!  This bag size is perfect, as it can fold up into a very small compact bag and yet it can expand into a large bag for carrying everything you need.   See for yourself in the pictures below:

Tote size is 13″ x 17″ but it also expands!  The secret is that the sides are 10″ wide and the bottom is 10″ wide, so the tote expands to 13″ x 27″.

TravelTote Side revised

It’s nice to have options as you can use it small or quite large.  And with a bag as versatile as this, it would make a great weekender bag or a travel tote to bring home all your new treasures!

Head on over to Karen’s website here, to find her new pattern, the Travel Tote- fresh off the press & posted for purchase:

Be sure to check the re-vamped Clothworks website to find a store near you to locate Karen’s gorgeously designed collection, Garden JoyClothworks is pleased to offer the new ‘ find a store’ feature on our website to make it easier to connect fabric enthusiasts to the shops that stock Clothworks fabric!

Extended Deadline for Home is in the Kitchen Fat Quarter Give-a-way!

HIITK FQP Giveaway

Greetings faithful blog readers!  Are ya’ll wearing green??  Because today is your lucky day!  Happy  St. Patrick’s Day!  I’ve decided to extend the deadline to enter into the Home is in the Kitchen Fat Quarter Pack Give-a-Way!!

If you haven’t already noticed, last week, the Clothworks website underwent a  revamp.  We hope you like the new look and have found the ‘Where to Buy’ feature to be quite helpful in your search of Clothworks fabrics!  The re-vamping did not just stop with the Clothworks website.  Clothworks’ blog underwent a make-over, too.   We hope you’re enjoying the sleeker design that currently graces our blog, The Works!

So sometime last week during the big switcheroo from the old website to the new website, we lost some comments that were posted on our blog.  My apologies for running the Home is in the Kitchen Fat Quarter Pack Giveaway during the week that we made this change!  The luck of the Irish was not on my side, and any comments posted on the blog on Monday March 10th & March 11th did not make it over during the big switch.  I blame it on those pesky leprechauns!!

To offer everyone another chance at winning that ‘pot ‘o gold’, err, I mean fat quarter bundle of Home is in the Kitchen, the new charming Clothworks line by designer Dan DiPaolo , I’m extending the deadline by another week .  Remember, there are 3 fat quarter bundles  (1 for each winner) up for grabs.  To enter into the Give-a-Way, please read the following:

1) Please allow one comment only per contestant on this blog entry.  Note, I will count the 7 current comments that were saved on last Monday’s blog entry of Home is in the Kitchen FQP Give-A-Way.  And yes, you may continue commenting here on this blog entry.

2)  Contestants must have a shipping address within the United States of America.

3)  The deadline for comments ends on Sunday March 23, 2014 at 11:59 pm PDT.

On Monday, March 24th, 2014, I will randomly draw 3 winners from the comments posted on the blog and will make the announcement on the blog.  I’ll also contact the 3 winners by email- so make sure you check your junk email folders to see if it ended up there, just in case!

Thanks for your patience, faithful readers of The Works!  I encourage you to post your comment again if it was lost during the website transition last week.  Fingers crossed and wearing your lucky socks, you just might win!

Sue Zipkin’s Tangier Give-a-way and More!

fat quarter contest pic

The universe must be in a giving mood this week!  We’ve got the ‘Home is in the Kitchen’ FQP give-a-way currently going on here at The Works, and this just in….Designer Sue Zipkin is hosting a little giveaway on her blog with a gorgeous bundle of Tangier fat quarters up for grabs!!

Sue’s recent Clothworks fabric release, Tangier, has hit the shops and the demand for it has not ceased.  Maybe it’s those beautiful bold colors used in the prints that attract your eye:  cobalt blue, brick red, aqua, and lime all grounded together with white.  Paired with Sue’s sweetly whimsical flower illustrations, multi-color dots, ethnic-inspired stripes, and tonal scroll prints- Tangier is a real winner!!  As I got to talking with Sue, she shared with me that her artwork used for Tangier has also been released in other forms of media besides fabric.  I was so curious to see how it translated, I begged her for pictures!!

Sue was very kind enough to share all of these beautiful photos that she snapped so I could show you, our faithful Clothworks blog followers, how well her artwork translates into other markets besides fabric.

For instance, there’s a whole dinnerware collection that’s out now in shops, using the same artwork and similar colors to Tangier.  So when you’ve finished making your Tangier table runner, napkins, and place mats, why not buy the matching dinner set?

This one below is my favorite…but I don’t think the kitty’s for purchase!

There’s also a lovely stationery line just released called ‘Home is Where Our Story Begins’ which uses Sue’s artwork for Tangier.  So when you’ve stitched that gift for someone special made from Clothworks Tangier fabric, you can pair it with a matching note!

As you can see, Sue is extremely gifted- her illustration, photography, and use of color!  Seeing her gorgeous artwork used in the Tangier line of fabric by Clothworks, as well as in dinnerware and stationery, just goes to show!!

To enter in Sue’s give-a-way of the Tangier FQP, head on over to her blog here.  Make sure you stay a bit to see all the loveliness that abounds there!

To keep current with Sue, you can visit her facebook page here.

What’s Cookin’ at the Works: Soup’s On!

avgolemono soup

Though Spring is almost around the corner like the calendar says, March can still be a chilly, brisk month.  This week was my turn to bring in soup for Soup of the Week Club here at The Works.  In hopes of taking everyone away from the soggy Pacific Northwest to the warm, sun-drenched Greek island of Santorini, I brought Avgolemono soup.  This basic soup consists of orzo pasta, chicken broth, and chicken bits.  Looks are deceiving, though.  A carefully whisked mixture of lemon juice and eggs adds the tangy flavor and thick, creamy texture of this soup.  Pure comfort and joy in a cup, I tell ya!

To add to the Greek fare, I paired this soup with a spread of hummus, pita, kalamata olives, and a Horiatiki salad to meet the daily veggie serving, too!

My big fat greek lunch spread

Just short of a Greek Feast (minus the baklava), everyone’s stomachs were saying ‘OPA!’ by the end of lunch!

See you next week for another installment of Soup’s On at the Works!

The Wonderful Folks of the Works- Happy Retirement, Bonnie!

Bonnie- Handmade tea towel

Last week marked another milestone in Clothworks history.  Our beloved Bonnie, pattern queen and color extraordinaire, retired from The Works after 14 wonderful years of service!  As is the case with all Clothworks employees that retire, we throw a potluck luncheon and send them off in grand style!  Bonnie’s big send-off was extra special as most of the current employees (and a few Clothworks retirees) went the extra mile and made her departing gifts using Clothworks fabric.  We decided to go with a ‘kitchen theme’ making all sorts of wares: from pot holders to placemats, table runners to napkins, and so much more.  Bonnie is shown in the pic above modeling a tea-towel made by Kathleen with a fussy cut rooster appliqué  from the Home is in the Kitchen fabric line by Clothworks. All of these gifts were lovingly stitched up using the perfect fabric to compliment any kitchen, Fresh Eggs and Home is in the Kitchen, both designed by new designer, Dan DiPaolo.

Bonnie Gifts Collage

Ted, the head honcho at The Works, gave a wonderful speech about Bonnie’s contributions to Clothworks and bestowed her with his parting gift of choice- a personalized selection of fabulous books!  Bonnie loves to travel, loves her tea, loves doing the crossword, and loves great literature- and Ted followed through in sending her off with some wonderful hardbound books specific to each of these topics.  Candice, the Creative Director, made some lovely coasters and trivets using hand-dyed wool in beautiful muted colors with a polka-dot appliqué design- all hand-sewn using a blanket stitch finish.   I made Bonnie a sturdy tote bag from denim with a ‘crossword’ layout that says ‘Pattern Queen.’  I spent many a lunch break with Bonnie learning from her crossword puzzle know-how!  We will sorely miss Bonnie here at The Works!  It just won’t be the same around here without her sweet smile, quilting pattern knowledge, and eye for color!

me time- bonnie

Is it tea time already?  No….it’s finally ‘me’ time!

Best of luck, Bonnie!

What’s Cookin’ at the Works: Soup’s On!

just good chili

Is my calendar correct??!!  Does Spring officially start on March 20th?!!  For most of you living in the US, the winter has been a challenging one this year and it seems that spring is nowhere in sight with the continuous pelting of snow & ice.  That’s nothing a hearty bowl of chili can’t fix!!  This week’s Soup of the Week Club entry is brought to us again by Miryam, who previously brought us the Spicy Chicken & Hominy.  Head on over to the Seattle Times to get this simple no-nonsense chili recipe, plainly called- ‘Just Good Chili’.  Dress it up with cheese, green onions, sour cream, and cornbread.  Take a bite, close your eyes, and maybe, just maybe, you will feel the warmth of Spring hit you…or maybe that was just a bit too much Sriracha sauce!!  Bon Appetit!
