July is here, Summer’s in full swing, and soon we’ll be seeing shades of Red-White-‘n-Blue! With July 4th just a few days away, besides attending a grill-out, watching the fireworks, and relishing in a piece of homemade pie (cherry cobbler a la mode is calling my name), I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate my patriotism than to buy some American Made Brand solids fabric and make something special! Come to think of it….I know the perfect quilt I’d make with some AMB solids fabric….The Modern America quilt by Jerilynn Lijewski!!
It takes a ‘Beautiful Mind’ like Jerilynn’s to create such an involved pattern depicting a map of the U.S.A.!! Rather than using applique techniques to form the shapes of the states, Jerilynn decided to take on the task of creating a pieced quilt pattern. In order to attempt this construction technique while designing the pattern, Jerilynn needed to simplify the shapes of each state to get the seams to match up to her liking.
As she explained to me, some folks who live near state borders may discover their towns have gone missing when looking at her fabric-pieced version of the USA. You can only imagine how much paper she went through during the pattern revision stages of this process, as well as how much time it took her to generate this piece of quilting genius! Her husband was starting to worry just a bit. After a year of working on the pattern off and on, Jerilynn was able to complete her masterpiece and is now selling her quilt pattern design, Modern America, under the Indygo Junction label. She knew it would appeal to an audience of like-minded, maybe just a tad crazy in a good way, quilters who love to tackle these kinds of quirky patterns.
As you can tell from the pattern cover above, you can use the individual templates of the states to make matching pillows, too!! Go to Indygo Junction to get this pattern before it flies off the shelves!
The simplified, geometric-looking shapes of the states that Jerilynn has designed in her pattern, coupled with the use of the American Made Brand solid fabrics, really lend themselves well to the Modern Quilting movement. I’m also loving Jerilynn’s quilt label- with matching embroidery design, too!
And if you’re going on a road trip across America this summer, much like the virtual AMB Blog Tour that we just completed here on the Works, perhaps you can follow this quilt on its travels, too! Jerilynn’s Modern America quilt will make an appearance at Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in Sisters, OR on July 12, 2014!!
As for Jerilynn’s plans, she’s currently working on a twin-sized version of her Modern America quilt and hopes to complete this in another year. To keep up with her crafty projects, follow Jerilynn on her blog, Jerisew(s).
Have a fun and safe Fourth of July!
