AMB License Plate Quilt…..Home at Last!

The American Made Brand License Plate Quilt has finally made it home…all in one piece!  Kudos to the prompt turn-around and lovely quilting job by longarm quilter, Loretta Orsborn, of Orsborn Specialty Quilting.  Loretta really had her hands full when it came to quilting this quilt!!  With 50 blocks that are sized as an actual license plate, plus sashing and borders– it all amounted to one seriously large quilt!!  Maybe almost as big as Texas 🙂

Here are my pictorial attempts in trying to capture this American Beauty, all made using American Made Brand solid fabrics.

Let’s give a round of applause to all who lent a hand in making this quilt happen!  Thanks to Candice, our Creative Director and Marketing Whiz, who organized the AMB blog tour.  A Standing ‘O’ goes out to all 50 of our Blogger friends, or as I like to call them, our State Ambassadors, who provided their talent and sewing ingenuity to create these distinctive state license plate blocks.  Hats off to Toni B, our Sample Room Extraordinaire and Quilting Queen who designed the layout and pieced the quilt top, and kudos to Loretta Orsborn, the quilter, who completed this quilt!!!  Bravo!!!

AMB License Plate Quilt Update

AMB license quilt straight on photo

Now that Summer has officially ended, it’s time to make way for the cooler weather of Autumn.  I guess that’s perfect timing for our American Made Brand License Plate Quilt to head on one more road trip… to the quilter, that is!!  Toni B., one of our resident Quilter Extraordinaires, rose to the occasion to design and piece the top of this amazing quilt comprised of 50 ‘license plate-inspired’ blocks.  If you’ve been following us here on The Works, you may remember we kicked off the summer season with the AMB blog tour – a virtual road trip to all 50 States in the USA!  We met some super friendly & talented blogger friends in each state who were so warm enough to share some of the local culture and wowed us with their craftiness in contributing a quilt block of their own design in the same format as a real license plate!  One by one, our office was flooded with envelopes containing these clever quilt block designs.  Finally, after all 50 blocks had arrived, Toni B. threw all of the blocks up on the design wall and when she arrived on a desired placement, she began to piece the top of this quilt.  As all the license plate blocks used American Made Brand solid fabrics , Toni continued using these solids with the sashing and borders in the quilt top, too.

Here are a few more pics, with some close-up partial views of the quilt top, snapped in time before the quilt was packed up and sent back on the road again—off to be quilted!  This quilt has definitely gotten some mileage, you could say ;)!!

Time for a Giveaway…..and Your Feedback, Too!

Crush Fat Quarter Bundle Giveaway

I don’t know about your neck of the woods, but up here in the Pacific Northwest, it still feels like the end of July with record-setting heat and plenty of sunshine.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m soaking up every minute of it before the sun hides behind those gloomy rain clouds for the next 9 months, but my internal clock is quietly asking ‘Where’s autumn?’

When I look at designer Sue Zipkin’s recent Clothworks collection, Crush, I immediately think of Autumn!  Those rich, jewel tone shades get me in the mood for cooler weather.  The leafy prints in harvest hues make me yearn for the beautiful fall foliage that awaits!  And the grapes that dazzle in the main focal print of the Crush fabric collection remind me of chilly fall nights spent with friends conversing around a bonfire sipping mulled wine!  No wonder Crush was such a popular collection for us….I bet it conjures up so many warm & fuzzy memories of autumn for many!!  Thank goodness we kept a little bit to make a fat quarter bundle!

That’s right, it’s time for a giveaway, and up for grabs is one fat quarter bundle of a couple fabrics from Sue Zipkin’s Crush collection + 2 complimentary solids from the new American Made Brand solids collection!!

Fun Friday: Mini Bag Tutorial + Giveaway!!!

Pouch Collage

Super Quick Mini Bag by Deborah Stanley: Versatile and the perfect pouch for toting personal items!

Our friend Deborah Stanley of Deb Stanley Studio has come up with the perfect solution for using up small pieces of fabric– a Super Quick Mini Bag!  The possibilities are endless as to what fabric combinations you can use to create this super easy-to-construct bag.  As you can see in the picture above, Deb had fun in mixing coordinating fabrics on each side of the bag, using prints from the recently delivered Clothworks collection, Poppy Passion by Karen Roti.  But it’s the little details I love about this super cute bag– the velcro closure, the lining & quilting, and the dotted ribbon trim that ties it all together!  Just see for yourself in the pics below- adding different trims and notions, such as buttons, can create a distinctive looking bag with every time you sit down at the sewing machine!

Check out her Tutorial below to create this sweet bag!  Perfect for your little ones as you send them back-to-school, or keep it for yourself to hold all your necessities!  Scroll down after the tutorial to find 2 different options in downloading a PDF file of this tutorial- one with drawn diagrams and one with photos.  Take your pick!

This bag is so quick and easy to make! Great to hold coupons, cosmetics, small gifts or a gift card. Match the fabric theme to the recipient’s interests and embellish as much as you like!

Bag front: Fabric A: (one) 2-1/2”x9” strip and Fabric B: (one) 5”x9” strip

Bag back: Fabric C: (one) 7”x9” piece

Lining: Fabric D: (two) 7”x9” pieces

Batting: (two) 7×9” pieces cotton batting

7” strip of 3/4” hook/loop tape

Sew together 2-1/2” strip and 5” strip together with 1/4” seam allowance to form 7”x9” bag front.

Layer: bag front (right side up), batting, lining (right side down).

Quilt as desired. The fastest design is a loose grid of curved lines, but this is a great project to practice free motion quilt designs.

TRIM to 6” x 8-1/2”. Zig-zag stitch around all four edges.

Layer bag back (right side up), batting, and lining (right side down).

Quilt as desired. TRIM to 6”x 8-1/2”. Zig-zag stitch around all four edges.

Center hook/loop tape (either hook or loop half), right side up, overlapping the top edge of bag front by a scant 1/4”.

Zig-zag or straight stitch in place.

Turn to lining side and straight stitch in place at top and bottom of hook/loop tape.

Repeat for bag back, using remaining half of hook/loop tape.

Place bag front and bag back right sides together.

Using a short stitch length, sew down one side, across bottom and up opposite side.

Zig-zag stitch down sides and bottom to finish edges.

Use one fabric, an orphan block, or piece scrap strips for the bag front and/or back.

Change the size of the bag to fit your tablet, notebook, or files. Add 1/4” seam allowance to both sides and bottom and 1” to the top for the hook/loop closure. Cut the hook/loop tape 1-1/2” smaller than the top measurement.

Embellish with ribbon, buttons, beads, or embroidery.

Add a ribbon wrist strap before sewing front and back together.
