American Made Brand: Mystery Block of the Month Quilt

Happy Mondays ahead! We are excited to introduce our first Mystery block of the month: Our Land, featuring our American Made Brand solids.

Starting in May, we’ll post a new America-inspired block design the first Monday of each month. Use our suggested AMB colors or strike out on your own with an AMB palette you devise.

You’ll stay in the groove with a little inspiration every week. Every Monday, look for our blog post related to the month’s block. Tutorials, related projects, color variations, fun links, etc.

If you are thinking right now “I’m not a very advanced quilter.” “I don’t have time for this.” Or even, “I don’t like surprises!” … well, we’ve got you covered. We’ve had three expert-level quilters and a couple of regular Janes busy designing instructions and a program that is easy to follow. The quilt blocks employ different techniques so sometimes you’ll stretch your skills and others revisit your old standby methods. You have a whole month for each block, too! Plenty of time to use our tutorials and post your queries on our Instagram, blog or Facebook page.

We’ve tested the actual quilt, and it came out dandy. So quilt along with us!

Each month, submit photos of your block to #AMBmystery on Instagram for a chance to win fabulous fabric prizes. The prizes will change from month to month, and we’ll select winners randomly from all the submissions.

Journey’s end, and an opportunity to give back. With the last block design, we’ll send you finishing instructions to meet the specific guidelines of both Quilts for Kids and Quilts of Valor.  Will you choose one of these groups to share your love of our land? Or does another cause tug at your heartstrings?

Stay tuned for next Monday May 2nd, as we launch the first post about this here on the Works!

Fresh Batik Ad

Ms. Calliope is sitting atop the adorable quilt called Splash by The Quilt Factory made up in Clothworks Fresh Batiks .  The colorful vibrant tones of the Fresh Batiks fabrics add some zip to a typical overcast day on the Puget Sound here in Seattle, WA.  Ms. Calliope adds her mega-watt charm to elevate Fresh Batiks to star status!  We feel so honored to be represented by this special celeb and thank her mama, September- Graphic Designer Extraordinaire, for snapping this fabulous pic & creating this ad!  Well done, ladies!

Amazing Clothworks Show & Tell with Daisy Dance!

sleeping bag - matching pillow

Introducing the latest show & tell creation by one of the many talented Clothworks employees!  Debbie, our shipper extraordinaire here at the office, wanted to surprise her daughter who is about to set off on her first school camping trip.  Rather than going to the store and buying a sleeping bag, Debbie thought it would be extra special to make a sleeping bag for her daughter to take on her trip.  When surrounded by beautiful Clothworks fabrics, day in & day out, the most daunting part of the process was selecting the fabric to use.  Not to worry, fabric designer Sue Zipkin’s most recent release, the gorgeous Daisy Dance collection, caught Debbie’s eye.  The pretty daisy focal print, in purples and dark blues was very nicely accented by the light blue Impressions Moire basic.

Sleeping Bag pattern cover

Making a sleeping bag for the first time was a little bit of a challenge for Debbie, but luckily she had a great pattern to follow called Little Sleepers by Whistlepig Creek Productions.  Besides selecting the fabric for her creation, inserting a sleeping bag zipper was probably the second trickiest task during the process.

And with a few stitches of the machine and some extra special hand-made love, Debbie was quite successful in completing her first ever sleeping bag and pillow sham (with French seams, too) for her daughter’s camping trip!  Lucky girl!

Well done, Debbie!  Thank you for sharing your fantastic work!

Amazing Show & Tell: Fresh Batiks® by Clothworks!

Toni's Whirlpool batik wallhanging

Our resident quilting queen and sample room extraordinaire, the talented Toni B., recently went on a quilting retreat and came back with some beautiful batik goodies to share.  Working in the Clothworks sample room and warehouse is kind of like being a kid in a candy store for a quilter and fabric lover. So many temptations every where you turn.  Especially those beautiful Fresh Batiks® Minerals and Botanica prints, offered in bold, bright colors with a soft hand, to boot!  Toni B. had taken a class from a local quilter, Eda Lee Haas, and created the wall-hanging (perfectly square matched to the grid) shown above in the pic.  The technique was a quilt-as-you-go, called the Whirlpool.  What a wonderful  use of Fresh Batiks®Minerals, with a few print designs thrown in for interest.  This design reminds me of a color wheel- so bright and cheery- with lots of movement for the eyes.

Collage Batik Bag

The second fun show & tell project is from a pattern called The Mondo Bag by Quiltsmart.  Toni B. created this fun, multi-color harlequin patchwork using various patterns and colors in the Fresh Batiks® Botanica line.  Find out more info about the Quiltsmart Mondo Bag here.

Thank you Toni B for sharing these lovely, inspiring projects with us.
