Clothworks Basics: Colorful & Cute in ‘Georgie Giraffe’ Quilt

Spotted in the latest edition of Quiltmaker Magazine– September/October 2016, is this adorable quilt called ‘Georgie Giraffe’ designed by Deb Grogan.  Ever since grandchildren entered the picture for her, Deb has been inspired to design and create quilts for little ones.  What makes this quilt a stand-out is the mix of a traditional block design with a whimsical animal applique design that has three-dimensional features to it (notice those darling 3-D giraffe ears).

Quilt designer Deb Grogan not only has created a quilt oozing with cuteness, but has managed to make great use of the cheery colors found in the various Clothworks Basics color palettes.  American Made Brand solid cottons, Impressions Moire, and Everyday Organic Solids are just some of the Clothworks fabrics that breathe life into this sweet crib-sized quilt.

Mariners Madness with American Made Brand and Robin Ruth Designs

If there’s one thing I look forward to every summer here in Seattle, it’s catching a Mariner’s baseball game at Safeco Field.   There’s nothing like enjoying time with friends, scarfing down a hot dog, and rooting for the M’s!  This past Tuesday, it was ‘Stitch ‘N Pitch Night’ at Safeco field, dedicated to the fiber arts community here in Seattle.  The Clothworks crew even made it a fun company outing to celebrate the event.  Along with watching the game– knitting, stitching, and all kinds of crafty handwork was encouraged!  Several local Fiber Arts vendors set up booths in the stadium selling various tools, kits, patterns, and all sorts of projects that you could work on during the game or take home with you for some rainy day.  And speaking of weather, we could not have asked for a more perfect evening– sunglasses and a light jacket was all that was required.

Speaking of the Mariners and fiber arts booths…we bumped into one of our lovely, talented quilter friends, Robin Ruth of Robin Ruth Design.  Robin is well-known in the quilting world for creating a nifty ruler tool that makes it a cinch to create those complex Mariner’s Compass quilt blocks.  Here she is below sporting one of her Mariner’s Compass pieced designs (in Seattle Mariner colors, of course!)Robin Long CollageRobin Ruth Design could not be located in a better place!  Her Mariner’s Compass quilt block designs are near-replicas of the Seattle Mariner’s logo!!  Just look at this nifty duffel bag she made using American Made Brand solid cottons combined with licensed Seattle Mariner’s fabric.

The Robin Ruth Design booth was decked out in Seattle Mariners team colors, as well as Mariner’s Compass tools and patterns!

American Made Mystery BOM Quilt: Block 3- Diamond Deserts

Photo Credit: Sparkling Thorn by Thangaraj Kumaravel, Creative Commons License

I’ve roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps

To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts;

And all around me a voice was sounding:

This land was made for you and me. – Woody Guthrie

The “In Every Desert Hides a Well” block is a perfect place to start thinking about how you might embellish your finished quilt. What could be more beautiful than beadwork to evoke that sparkling quality of a desert landscape at dawn? Or perhaps your cactus needs a few realistic needles you can create with embroidery. The time to add these touches is at the end, when all your blocks are sewn together and you’ve created your quilt sandwich with batting and backing. But no harm in planning now!

We’ve uncovered two great tutorials that cover beading and embroidery of quilts. If you plan to bead, check out the embroidery link as well, since she covers handy tips on how to work so that the back of your quilt is still beautiful after you embellish the front.

Creation Completed: AMB Solid Cottons + Stitched in Color Collaboration

A few weeks ago here on the Works, we featured the exciting collaboration between American Made Brand solid cottons and talented quilter/ blogger Rachel Hauser of Stitched in Color in this post.  Rachel was about to begin work on a quilt project using these beautiful blues and neutrals from the American Made Brand color palette.

Taking a page out of The Improv Book for Modern Quilters by Sherri Lynn Wood for inspiration, Rachel came across some surprises and discoveries along her quilting journey.  Without giving away too much, follow this link to see her finished creation using AMB cottons and read about her process.  More beautiful pictures of her quilt are on display there, too.  And last I checked, her newest creation sold immediately on her etsy site.  Well done, Rachel!

Fun Friday Show & Tell: These Pincushions are the Bee’s Knees!

Bee Pin Cushions

Had to share these adorable pincushion creations made by our quilting friend and helper, Lorri.  Lorri belongs to a local quilt guild called the Busy Bee Quilters, and recently the guild held a pincushion challenge.  Taking inspiration from their name, Lorri created these busy bee pincushions, using the classic chicken pincushion pattern as a base.  You might not be able to tell in the pic, but the black and white stripe fabric used was from an older Clothworks release by designer Masha D’yans.  Don’t you just love all those details that Lorri added to her bees?  From the daisies to the daisy-shaped button applied to the polka-dot ribbon wings!  The seed bead eyes and thread antennae give personality to these little buggers, too!

Bees and ladybugs pincushions

The bees turned out so cute, Lorri made some ladybug friends!  The solid black fabric used for the ladybugs is American Made Brand cotton, too!  Lorri was so pleased with how her pincushions turned out, she’s been making more to gift them to lucky recipients.  And speaking of luck– according to superstition, it’s good luck to give away a pincushion with a pin stuck in it!

Bee and Pincushion Family

Talk about a Busy Bee! Here’s the whole family!  Well done, Lorri!  Thanks for sharing your adorable pincushions!

American Made Mystery BOM Quilt: BLOCK 3 – July 2016

As we celebrate Independence Day, AMB Mystery Mondays take a turn to the dry side with a block that celebrates the desert areas of Our Land. Many people feel a visit to the desert brings clarity. We’ve developed the piecing instructions for this sprightly saguaro with that in mind. Some of the pieces are pretty small, but construction method keeps the work simple. This month you’ll find the two official Quilts of Valor and Quilts for Kids versions exactly the same, so just one pattern for both.

Download the PDF pattern here. Submit photos of your finished block to #AMBmystery on Instagram (or email your photo to info at Clothworks dot com) for a chance to win wonderful prizes.

If you are new to printing pdf patterns, this blog post lays out all the steps for you. It’s easy.
