Fun Friday Show & Tell: These Pincushions are the Bee’s Knees!

Bee Pin Cushions

Had to share these adorable pincushion creations made by our quilting friend and helper, Lorri.  Lorri belongs to a local quilt guild called the Busy Bee Quilters, and recently the guild held a pincushion challenge.  Taking inspiration from their name, Lorri created these busy bee pincushions, using the classic chicken pincushion pattern as a base.  You might not be able to tell in the pic, but the black and white stripe fabric used was from an older Clothworks release by designer Masha D’yans.  Don’t you just love all those details that Lorri added to her bees?  From the daisies to the daisy-shaped button applied to the polka-dot ribbon wings!  The seed bead eyes and thread antennae give personality to these little buggers, too!

Bees and ladybugs pincushions

The bees turned out so cute, Lorri made some ladybug friends!  The solid black fabric used for the ladybugs is American Made Brand cotton, too!  Lorri was so pleased with how her pincushions turned out, she’s been making more to gift them to lucky recipients.  And speaking of luck– according to superstition, it’s good luck to give away a pincushion with a pin stuck in it!

Bee and Pincushion Family

Talk about a Busy Bee! Here’s the whole family!  Well done, Lorri!  Thanks for sharing your adorable pincushions!

Happy Sewing!

Sensational Quilt Market Preview with AMB Precuts!

Here at the Works we’ve been furiously preparing for the Spring Quilt Market held in Salt Lake City, Utah this year from May 20th- May 22nd.  American Made Brand solid cottons will be featured at Market as we continue to attract more quilters & crafters interested in cotton fabric from the USA that’s not just made here, but grown here!  As our color palette increases each year since launching American Made Brand a few years ago, we are pleased to finally offer AMB solid cottons in Precut GoodsAmerican Made Brand solid Precuts are sold in Strip rolls, 5″s squares, and 10″ squares in some beautiful color themes from Pastels, Brights, and Neutrals to Autumn, Blues, and of course, Patriotic!  Do stop by your LQS to pick up some American Made Brand precuts and make that gorgeous quilt project that’s been on your mind.

Speaking of quilt projects and precut goods, this is a wonderful segue to feature our quilter friend, Robin Long, of Robin Ruth Design!!  Robin specializes in the Mariner’s Compass block piecing and has developed some super cool tools that make it easy (and approachable) to take a stab at constructing the complex Mariners Compass quilt block.  Sheer Genius!!

Nifty rulers and books by Robin Long of Robin Ruth Design, spotted in the April/ May 2016 issue of Quilter's Newsletter magazine.

Robin uses strip piecing along with her special rulers to construct gorgeous Mariner’s Compass block quilts.  Her intricate blocks translate well using the radiant solid cottons from American Made Brand.  We’re so lucky to have such unique collaboration with her and since Spring Quilt Market is just around the corner, Robin was anxious for us to show you a sneak peak of some the quilts that she will be showing.   In fact, she used some of the new American Made Brand precuts to create these beauties below……

Notice those gorgeous color schemes?  From top to bottom- Neutrals, Patriotic, and Brights– all from the American Made Brand Precuts!!  Well done, Robin!!!!  Our amazing long-arm quilting friend Loretta Orsborn, will lend her magic to finish these quilts to be displayed at Quilt Market in Salt Lake City in just a few days!

If you can’t make it Quilt Market to see these stunning quilts in person, do check out Robin’s website!  She offers a wealth of information on how to make Mariner’s Compass quilt blocks with video tutorials to coax even the most hesitant quilter.  And in this technological era, did you know there’s also an app for that? 🙂

Joking aside, Robin has a free app for designing her Mariner’s Compass blocks using the colors from the American Made Brand palette.

You can design and preview color combinations and take your shopping list to your LQS to purchase some American Made Brand solid cottons to make your splendid version of a Mariner’s Compass quilt!  How cool is that?!!

Road to California Quilt Show Highlights

R2C AMB Booth

Last week, American Made Brand made its first showing at the Road to California Quilt Show at the Ontario Convention Center in Ontario, California.  The experience was a positive one–connecting with quilters, quilt shop owners, long arm folks, and other crafty people, to continue promoting American Made Brand fabric– a 100% cotton that’s not just made here, but grown here in the USA, too!

Swatches and postcard R2C

Most of the folks who visited our booth left with some American Made Brand teaser packs (shown above) in array of solid colors.  But it wasn’t just the goodies that drew people to our booth.  Our display of quilt samples made up in the vibrant, saturated colors of American Made Brand fabric enticed many onlookers into the booth to get an up close view.

AMB Flag Selfie

The artistic interpretation of this American Flag quilt, ‘Flying High’ by Joined at the Hip, brought many people to our booth, either to take pictures of the quilt itself, or to take a selfie with it, such as this lovely lady decked out in matching patriotic fare.

Robin Ruth

Even quilt designer Robin Ruth and her mother made a visit to the AMB booth to pose with Robin’s spectacular Mariner’s Compass quilt in American Made Brand fabrics!

Tiny Quilt= Full Exhibit

Besides our booth display, American Made Brand was thrilled to also debut the Tiny Quilt Challenge exhibit at Road to California, as well!  See prior post for more pictures, including the Grand Prize Winner of the challenge.

R2C Shop Display Collage

Road to California was a busy show for us, but I managed to spot American Made Brand in these displays at The Sew N Sew and Carriage Country Quilts!

Being in Southern California in January was not so bad.  Especially with a pretty view like this.

It was paradise on the outside……and on the inside!
